Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

Poitou-Charentes

A strategic fortress in the troubled periods of history, Aubeterre was also a resting place for pilgrims.

Aubeterre overlooks the D. river, and has always been a place of great strategic interest. Each small street offers a magnificent view on the castle, on st Jacques’s church and the Apostles’ Tower where Henri IV is said to have slept on the eve of the battle of Coutros, on the wash-house in rue Barbecane and on houses with wooden galleries. Underneath the castle, St Jean’s subterranean church has 60 feet high vaults, a circular gallery, a necropolis of about 100 sarcophagus & a crypt of unknown origin
